What protein powder is best for me?
A very common trend with customers is that there are so many types of protein. This usually causes much confusion. Let's see if I can make your next protein choice simpler. There are a few categories that a protein wall should be broken up into (ours is displayed in such a manner).1) Isolate- cleanest, and in turn usually the most expensive per pound. You are paying for quality with isolates.- carbs and fats are minimal- usually highest protein content per scoop- the most unique characteristic is the 30min digestion time. This is by far the quickest.- isolates are designed for post workout quick digestion and recovery. It can be used in other situations such as increasing protein content of a meal with minimal calories.2) Blend/Sustained Release- both names are interchangeable and there are two subcategories- the first being casein heavy and the second being casein light. Also, the price range is like by the general consumer of powders.A) Picture 2 shows an example of a blend with no casein at all. This means that the digestion time of this protein will be roughly 2-3 hours depending on the blend of proteins. This version is great for making smoothies and will keep you full longer than an isolate. It can also be used for post workout if need be.B) Picture 3 shows an example of a casein heavy blend. This blend has a 6-8 hour digestion. This can be used for smoothies as well or in my mind the best way to use this is before bed. I'm not a fan of pure casein before bed but that is just my opinion.3) Plant based - this is a very popular option and is growing in popularity. People are either converting away from dairy for personal or medical reasons. - plant proteins tend to be in the neighborhood of the 2-3 hour digestion range. - plant proteins are also the most expensive per pound. There are a few honourable mentions such as; -beef protein> another non-dairy option with a 2-3 hour digestion time. -mass gainers> high calorie protein powders featuring either high carb or high fat formulas.Cheers!
